Mama's Stew Jazz Routine

This routine is a solo choreography that was commonly practiced by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers and served as a warm-up before they moved on to more challenging routines.

The name Mama Stew comes from Louise "Mama Lou" Parks was a dancer who played a crucial role in keeping Lindy Hop alive after the Savoy Ballroom closed in 1958. She began her career at the Savoy working in the coatroom and quickly became a prominent dancer at the venue. Over time, she established her professional dance company, which from 1961 to 1990 preserved the legacy of vernacular jazz dances such as the Lindy Hop. During the 60s and 70s, as popular dances began to shift away from partner dancing towards styles like The Twist, Hustle, and Disco, it was a monumental task to maintain Lindy Hop as a show dance and competitive dance.
